Winner: Ambient/Electronic Album of the Year, 2002, NAV
Here’s a wholly new approach to making music for and from whale songs. Walker plays violin into underwater landscapes, and the resulting recordings are wonderfully rich raw material for her studio-based compositions. Aquatic canyon walls and open spaces create a cathedral-like presence to her sound, and she builds the pieces around especially interesting and well-recorded whale songs. She adds electronics that range from spacy to funky, and while the overall tone is embracingly atmospheric, she avoids new-age cliches, using her classical training to forge a musical response to the whales that has a musical complexity that remains delightfully lyrical.
Walker has spent years pursuing three complementary paths: classical music training, cutting edge media technology, and field research in Alaska. She brings these diverse gifts together here in a way that will appeal to listeners across the soundscape spectrum.
This is not an album of environmental sound for relaxation, though listening to it might have a calming effect. Lisa’s work is more like a process by which the listener can escape its human separateness and hear the underwater world as a web of diverse energies enfolded within one deep rhythm beyond our perception. The voice of the violin speaks the language of the whales...a natural dialogue that sounds as a chorus of liquid brightness. My listeners enjoy this musical vision. Thank you for the deep music.
Marius-Christian Burcea, Radio Romania
Whale songs are ubiquitous in new age music, but Lisa Walker has made something really stunning on her album Grooved Whale. . . . the result is haunting, spiritual, hypnotic, and thoroughly engaging. Both the whales and Walker’s violin produce wavering tones that are at times interchangeable. Few recordings have so seamlessly integrated whale songs into the musical environment.

Stunning. . . Lisa Walker shows deep understanding of her subject and a remarkable capacity for innovation. If you like deep space or ambient music, this is definitely one you will want to hear.
