Rainforest Soundwalks:
Ambiences of Bosavi, Papua New Guinea

COVR "Other Music" Release of the Year runner up, 2001

Released in partnership with the Bosavi People's Fund, which receives 50% of gross sales.

Ten years after his groundbreaking Voices of the Rainforest, which presented the songs of the Bosavi people in the context of their natural soundscape, Steven Feld returns with his pure environmental sound followup. Four extended immersions into the quieter times of day draw us into the rich sonic interplay of birds, insects, amphibians, and the forests vegetation. Sublty crafted in the studio, this disc offers a hint of the near-infinite depth of the rainforest's voice.

Bosavi: Rainforest Music from Papua New Guinea

This specially-priced 3-CD set is a treasure trove of recordings made over a 25 year period among several indigenous villages around Mount Bosavi in Papua New Guinea. The discs chronicle the changing cultural context within which the local people join in the "lift-up-over sounding" of the forest's voice.

Bells and Winter Festivals of Greek Macedonia

This is the disc that began Steve's worldwide Bells quest. While working on Bright Balkan Morning, a book/CD about music in settled Romani (Gypsy) culture, Steve found himself with many more recordings centered on bells than could be worked into the book project. Folkways bit at the idea of releasing a bell-centric disc, a mention on NPR spurred a surprising sales run, and the rest is history.
